The prime vacation season of summer is quickly approaching and with it comes the usual barrage of questions. Where can we go this year that won’t break the bank? How can we get the most bang for the buck?
One of many popular options for vacation fun is an all-inclusive resort. Here, for one predetermined price, you and your partner or even your entire family can enjoy all the benefits of a resort experience, pay in advance and never have to shell out another dollar for your vacation. You’ll know upfront what your costs will be so there are no surprises. It sounds great, and in many cases it is, but there are a few things to think about before you jump in with both feet.
1. Many all-inclusive resort locations are on islands or parts of countries where the overall society and economy is more along the line of a third world nation. You are restricted to the resort area because the outlying vicinity is not safe. You are confined to a bubble existence for all of your activities and entertainment, largely for your own protection.

2. One of the great pleasures of vacationing is being able to see sites and enjoy experiences you aren’t exposed to at home. Your all-inclusive resort experience usually limits you to the offerings of the resort. You are discouraged from leaving the area to explore on your own so you may miss out on some of the great sights and sounds you could have found if you were traveling on your own. This is especially prevalent if you are vacationing in a less than safe environment. So, unless your vacation goal is to sit around the pool sipping umbrella drinks, you need to investigate what your resort is offering beyond their borders.

3. Resorts may make promises upfront that do not match your expectations upon arrival. Sure, it sounds great to have your travel, lodging, food, drink and entertainment prepaid. If the food is mediocre, the accommodations are shabby and the entertainers look and sound like they came from the local street gang, you may find yourself wishing you had spent your travel dollars more wisely. It pays to investigate and double check your options. It doesn’t hurt to seek recommendations from friends who have already experienced the trip.
Vacations should be memorable experiences for all the right reasons. They expand our horizons and make us appreciate the world around us. The chance to travel can make the labor put forth during the rest of the year worthwhile and give us a wider perspective on life. An all-inclusive resort vacation may or may not be a good option for you. Just be sure to check the fine print.
